Afghanistan’s National Institute of Music provides students from Grade 4 to Year 14 with high quality specialist music training within a general academic education to prepare them for professional careers in music and music education. Students completing Year 12 will achieve their high school certificate. Students completing the final two years will graduate with a Diploma in Music.
The institute’s curriculum is developed from Afghanistan’s general education program as taught in primary and secondary schools combined with a specialist music training program. The music program has been developed in association with the prestigious National College of Music, London based on the UK’s National Curriculum for Music with some adaptation to incorporate needs of Afghan music. Through this association the institute has achieved an international accreditation and examination system.
The innovative and creative music program is designed to be as comprehensive as possible to train students from an early age in a wide range of Afghan traditional music as well as Western classical music and also inform the students’ deeper understanding of music, its history and diverse forms throughout the world. The program is developed as two specialist training areas:
Afghan traditional instruments
Afghan classical and semi-classical singing
String instruments
Woodwind instruments
Brass instruments
Piano
Percussion
Guitar
For their practical training students will work in year group classes as well as receive one-to-one instrumental tuition on their chosen instruments.
The institute is an initiative of the Afghanistan Ministry of Education and students who attend are also completing their secondary education. There are no tuition fees and all instruments and materials are provided.
Students with financial difficulties will be eligible for scholarships to ensure their ability to attend.
