This is the first orchestra to be founded in Afghanistan in 30 years. Led by violin teacher William Harvey and clarinet teacher Ustad Farid Shefta, it combines Afghan and Western instruments in a unique sound, with a repertoire of Afghan and specially arranged Western Classical compositions. The AYO has performed throughout Kabul, including for President Hamid Karzai. It has also recorded songs for broadcast on national television and has plans and hopes for bringing its special music and positive vision to international audiences.
